Experience Everything Texas at the State Fair in Dallas

The Texas State Fair is one of those events that has to been seen to be believed, and with all the great deals on cheap hotels in Dallas right now this is the year to experience the very best that Texas has to offer. The State Fair this year begins on September 24th and what follows is over a week of food, music, food, events, a huge football game, oh and did I mention food?

It seems like every year the great people of Texas find a new item or two to fry at the fair and thankfully 2010 is no different. In recent years we have seen such classics as fried cola, fried hamburgers and the delightful deep fried Twinkie. This year however we have a brand new batch of contenders to take the field, and the leaders all share one thing in common, alcohol.

One of the features of the State Fair in recent years has been the Big Tex Choice Awards, and this year is the sixth annual competition with eight contenders stepping up to battle with their fried foods of choice vying for the first place prize. There will be everything from a fried club salad to fried caviar, but it is the two adult only menu items that have got people in Dallas talking as the countdown to fry off continues.

First on the menu is the All-American favorite, fried beer. Fried beer is a beer-filled pretzel-like dough pocket that’s shaped like ravioli. When you bite into the dough the beer oozes out into your mouth, there is no word yet on how warm or cold this beer is though, so at this point it is certainly a buyer beware situation!

The second item is a Tex-Mex classic, the deep fried frozen margarita. This wondrous creation includes a funnel cake batter mixed with either tequila or tequila-flavored wine, dusted with margarita mix and served in a salt-rimmed plastic glass. According to creator Jake Levy it tastes just like a regular margarita but does not include enough alcohol to get you drunk, “If somebody were to eat a dozen of them,” he said, “they might get a little head rush.”

So there you have a little run down on some of the fabulous eats that will be available at the 2010 Texas State Fair. Where else on this planet can you find such weird and wacky culinary creations to try and vote for?

There are plenty of reasons to come to Dallas year round, but the State Fair is a great opportunity to book a cheap hotel and come to explore the fairgrounds and see what crazy things are going on in Texas. As you can probably tell by the food on offer the fair offers up surprises every year, and like all good events you will never get the same experience twice!
