The city of Austin is not your typical Texas town.  Apparently, their motto is “Keep Austin Weird”; however, Portland Oregon boasts the same motto so I don’t know what to tell you.

But Austin is definitely a unique Texan town.  The typical Texas country-western flavor mixed with a definitive artist’s community is what makes Austin different and distinctive.  Austin is bohemian, funky, quirky, clever and fun.  So can you find a cheap hotel to stay at in this colorful town?  You sure can!  There are lots of options for travelers to choose from.

As with most towns, there is plenty of cheap lodging in Austin provided by quite a few Best Western and Comfort Inns. If you’re looking for something a little funkier—a little more “Austin” you may want to consider the Driskill Hotel.  The Driskill is centrally located in the heart of the city and is perfectly situated within walking distance of many popular nightclubs and other entertainment venues.

The Driskill is oozing with charm and history since it was built in 1886 as a showplace for the cattle baron Jesse Driskill.  The hotel provides small and cozy rooms that offer various themed suites.  Some of these themes include the Cattle Baron suite, the Yellow Rose Bridal Suite and the Renaissance Suite.  The rooms are small, but if you are looking for something different, this is the place for you.  The hotel is a member of the Historical Hotels of America and offers many luxurious amenities.  However, as of October 2010, rooms can be booked for as low as $179 per night and staying here allows you to experience all the uniqueness that Austin has to offer.

Another anecdote that adds to the quirkiness of the hotel, are the stories that it may be haunted! The Driskill is a very popular and historic landmark; however, reports from various sources including employees and guests have provided testimonials indicating that the hotel may have some permanent ghostly residences.  To me, this adds to the overall charm.  If paranormal activity intrigues you,  you should definitely visit the Driskill Hotel during your stay in Austin.  How often can you say you vacationed with ghosts?
